Dupuytren's disease is a benign proliferative disease occurring in the palmar and digital fascia producing nodules, cords & contractures. These cause progressive flexion contractures of the digits especially at metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joint level. The ring and little fingers are most commonly affected. More aggressive forms of the disease include bilateral involvement, ectopic lesions (penile fibromatosis-Peyronie's disease, and plantar fibromatosis-Ledderhose disease).
This disease is most commonly seen amongst Caucasian males of northern European ancestry. Associated links have been found with diabetes, trauma, especially manual vibration tool use, epilepsy and use of antiepileptic drugs, autoimmune diseases, HIV, smoking and alcoholic liver disease. The incidence is high in the west but sporadic cases have been reported from Africa and Asia.
